Sports Counselor Leah Howard Provides Six Free Sessions To College Female Athlete

The Virago Project, in partnership with Board Certified Sports Counselor, Leah Howard, has granted one collegiate female athlete six, free, one-hour consultation sessions in Spring 2021.

Leah Howard, MEd, APC, NCC provides research-supported psychotherapy that is tailored to athlete concerns including but not limited to life transitions, anxiety and stress, grief and loss, social support, and relationship/family issues.

After selecting the recipient of this opportunity, Sports Counselor Leah Howard said, “I decided to offer free consultations to college student-athletes because now more than ever there is a need to address mental health and wellness. I truly feel like it’s part of the work that I do to provide opportunities for the athlete community to speak with someone that is trained to address their unique needs. I also wanted to be an example for others in my field to remember to be philanthropic in our efforts to provide care.”

When asked about the new partnership, Taylor Treacy, Founder and CEO of The Virago Project, stated, “As soon as Leah reached out about providing this opportunity to an athlete in our community, we knew we were on board. Leah and I agreed that the recipient needed to be an athlete who wouldn’t otherwise have access to a mental health professional. Accessibility means everything and it’s heartening to know that professionals like Leah are committed to reaching those who could easily slip through the cracks.”

According to Howard, therapy is extremely beneficial for athletes.

“Therapy provides a safe space for athletes to express themselves and learn coping strategies to manage difficult situations or thinking patterns. Taking care of your mind is ultimately taking care of your body and can result in being an optimal competitor. Therapy can assist with learning skills that can be applied for life and can enhance the relationship one has with themselves and others in their lives.”, she says.

“After completing (this partnership) I would like for the (selected) student-athlete to be a happier and mentally healthier individual. I want to be an accountability partner and a supportive resource. Depending on what their needs are, I’m hoping they will be able to overcome any mental blocks or challenges that are preventing them from achieving their goals.”, stated Howard.

When asked about the decision process of partnering with The Virago Project, Howard said, “The Virago Project closely aligns with my mission of providing mental health access to the female athlete community. I have admired the educational resources they provide to the community through their post and the way they empower female athletes to prioritize their well-being.”
