Help Us Spread Awareness About Women Athlete’s Mental Health
Sportswomen go through a lot. Many athletes in our community have suffered silently while battling depression, overwhelm, self-doubt, anxiety, eating disorders, unfair treatment, identity loss, and more.
“We receive tons of messages from womxn athletes who are struggling with their mental health,” The Virago Project’s CEO Taylor Treacy said Monday, “We’ve decided to launch a Virtual 5k not only to spread awareness about the mental challenges womxn athletes go through, but also to give those athletes a space to reflect on the hurdles they’ve faced and how they’ve overcome them.”
On Thanksgiving morning, The Virago Project will run (or walk) 3.1 miles to reflect on the issues that have impacted the mental health of the global community of sportswomxn and womxn who work in sports.
Upon completing the 5k, The Virago Project will share it’s stories with other womxn athletes via social media, fill them with encouragement, and let them know they are not alone!
“I remember being alone on Thanksgiving Day when I was playing volleyball overseas in England. I know that there are other professional and state-side athletes who’s Thanksgiving Day plans have been derailed by the pandemic, so we’re hoping that this virtual event will provide a sense of community on a day that could be otherwise lacking communal activities”, said Treacy.
